I worked for a magazine for 10yrs after art school and have continued to do publication design in my freelance business. I just would like to give you a couple of tips on cover design. I would spend more time on your nameplate, because when designing a magazine you have to think of its placement on the newsstand and the first fourth of your magazine is you're selling feature. Also the left side of the magazine should have your main headlines because usually magazine venders will overlap covers.

Hi, Nice to see you are using the right programs. I was impressed with your first cover but shows how much there is still to learn. In the trade we find ourselves creating covers in under one hour. Established design rules, supplied images and text helps so cannot expect you to have a professional cover from the outset. For any student reading this, just bear one thing in mind.. when designing covers...make sure it can be read 15ft away and keep it simple. Best, Dean, MagazineProduction.co

heey man i have also been ask to do a project to design a magazine cover except we have to use some lame template, though all of the image is to be our own and I was wondering if you tell me how you vectorised in illustrator through live trace and changed the colours etc. Btw your cover is great (Y).

Hi there, I just got your request to be friends. The mag cover looks good. What year of school are you in? I go to the art institute for media and animation. I like Photo shop and illustrator you can do some great layouts. Good job on your project, it looks good.

you must be doing excellent in school man, all your work looks top notch to m e
Hey man, nice video. The one thing I noticed that you're doing is what a lot of other design students seem to do when they design. You have too many different fonts on the cover and they all look randomly placed and are HUGE. You may have already improved since the video was posted back in March but I wanted to point it out. What you should be doing is a grid based layout so that everything fits in place and make the fonts smaller and use a variation of the same font. Look at grid design man. ;)

@jeremytodd77 yep totally agree. this was my first magazine layout. and it's funny, our teacher did the assignment to see if we would use grids! And the module/lesson after that was teaching about grids and consistency lol So you are right on man! Thank you =)

@AcademyArtVenture Hey, I've just been assinged the same project. I'm not sure if this is a dumb question or not, so forgive me if it is lol.
But, What is a grid?
OhhWaldoBaybee 1 year ago
@OhhWaldoBaybee No question is stupid =), basically a "grid" is just like an invisible checkerboard, in which different things line up to make the entire design flow together. Things just look better with grids. Like, all the text on this cover lines up from top to bottom on the left side (that's just one example though). Also, if you are using Illustrator, you can go to "View > Snap To Grid" as well as "View > Show Grid" to help out! Feel free to ask anything else!! =)

what is that sprint thing dude?

@SamAndTrent
The sprint thing is a wi-fi internet connector.
So... I just need to plug it into my usb port on my laptop, and wherever a cell phone works, my internet will work. I can take it on the road, in the car, on vacation, or just have it at home. When everyone else's internet goes down in a storm, mine will be fine!! =)
