James Brown is number one. But his emphasis on "clean" lyrics and performing is a little curious. There was a space of about 10 years when released some very provocative, frankly adult recordings. I love them all but his live "Hot Pants" from that time, is definitely NOT for the whole family.

He did tone things down and make some more melodious music.

Either way - a genius............

@PurpleShades1 james once said to michael while prince was performing "look and learn". Prince was doing his punk badass attitude at the time. he played a riff of a not very well known james brown song and changed the beat showing everyone his respect for james catalogue. MIchael did a james brown imitation (what he always did same routine for 30 years). who cares what people thought about it. show me MJ playing an instrument.. that easy 2 chord piano add doesnt count as u cannot see his hands.

@giugnhgbvinierngvb89 You make it seem as though Prince plays every instrument simultaneously onstage, that's not true. Michael was credited as playing the drums and guitar on some tracks from the 'Blood On The Dancefloor' album. Interestingly enough, Prince didn't really sing the MJ tracks that he performed, he had a female singer do that. Just look at the way that people reacted o Michael when James brown brought him onstage in '83, compared to Prince.

@PurpleShades1 Prince CAN PLAY michaels music and Michael cannot play prince songs. wonder why...rick was a prince fan and admired each other. they toured together and "hated" each other as a marketing strat. Lil richard loooves prince. u should see him talking about prince. MIchael has "his" band playing beautiful night jam at the bad tour and mj fans didint even know it was a prince song. michale asked prince to tour together and went to too many prince shows.
