The 100 yards final from the 1978 World Final of.. The Superstars!

In the searing heat of Freeport in the Bahamas, and after two heats, the 100 yards final would prove to be a thrilling race between Greg Pruitt (USA), the American footballer, and Keith Fielding (GBR), the Rugby League player.

Although the judges awarded the race to Pruitt the video evidence seems pretty conclusive to many fans that Keith Fielding dipped on the line and actually took the victory. Fielding himself recalled that many fans wrote to him via the programme to say that they all thought he'd won.

The final was the first of three on the trot to be won by the Canadian footballer, Brian Budd. Commentary here is by the late great Ron Pickering.

  • Salford Rugby League's best

  • At 2:20...aren't those the residents from Del Boca Vista ??

  • back in 73' Pruitt ran a 40 yd dash against Bob Hayes on the short lived "pro track circuit" Hayes at 31 made the young Pruitt look like a slug,he beat him by over 2 yards if it had been 60 or more he would have been smoked by 10+

  • false start by Budd

  • Excellent time, I know it's only about 91 metres, but that's still pretty good. Fielding should have kept running as he'd caught Pruitt with 10 yards to go and was in fact ahead at that point. The dip actually cost him the race.

  • Pruitt won. The tv camera parallax is deceptive.

  • Why didn't they do it on a track with a photo finish?

  • yeah, Fielding won that. Surprised the footballer didn't dive in the last ten metres.

  • hi Greg
