CNN: Religion to become extinct experts predict

Organized religion will all but vanish eventually from nine Western-style democracies, a team of mathematicians predict in a new paper based on census data stretching back 100 years.

It won't die out completely, but "religion will be driven toward extinction" in countries including Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands, they say.

It will also wither away in Austria, the Czech Republic, Finland and Switzerland, they anticipate.

They can't make a prediction about the United States because the U.S. census doesn't ask about religion, lead author Daniel Abrams told CNN.

But nine other countries provide enough data for detailed mathematical modeling, he said.

in Ireland "no religon" is the second biggest faith group behind catholics in the latest census and it is rising. Most catholics in Ireland are not fanatics by any means any many have lost interest but still consider themselves catholic.

first, the three countries she showed on her wipescreen wera non consistent with each other, second, they tried to opinionize and ridicule the researchers wi the las comment about prophets being only good for idiots and children,,,but what is religion full of? Prophets! You can keep you religion toys, and play with them at home, just don't try to tell me that there is only one toy, and that i have to play with it.

So I do think that eventually, the percentage of believers will be substantially less. Complete extinction is doubtful, there are still practicing druids in Britain afterall, but their numbers will be less.

Eventually western civilization will lose it's religious population is decreasing, but I doubt it will go that fast. Though non believers are growing in number there is also the factor that people are also becoming less religious in the sense that they start to doubt sections of their faith but keep believing in it's core believe. An example of this is that there are Christians that don't believe that it is a sin to be gay.

This is nonsense, I come from New Zealand and religion is alive and well. In the seventies social scientists said the same and were embarrassed by 1978.
