  • The way Blue played ballads....his sound and the feeling was unforgettable...like he was telling a great human truth....why is that lacking in many of the younger virtuosos that are famous today? Blue could play a melody and I can still remember it in my mind today, 30 years later...that sound....

  • Did you know that Blue was 17 when he started playing??

  • Blue played a Martin Committee for most of his career. He also played a Conn Connstellation.

  • @lpsling My theory:the current blues are often based on materialism or the lack of while technology has made it much easier to clone notes. Being a clone is now considered cool.Quite not accepted during the real jazz years. Look at who the best were .They had the Blues for real, living in America .Lack of music programs and competent jazz models as teachers have hurt the development of those who most closely resemble the musics best and most innovative soulful players. All by design.

  • Jimmy Heath's "The Thumper" and Blue Mitchell's "Blue Soul" are 2 of the 25 best jazz albums every made! Very similar albums recorded very close together by Riverside. Nat adderly(Cornet) plays for Heath on "The Thumper".

Both are sextets that are well organized, well orchestrated with a bigger sound.
