Suddenly, because someone mentioned it in a forum, I found myself thinking about music for Westerns. So I started to write a bit of music just relying on my distant, untrustworthy, and slightly nostalgic memories of the Westerns I sometimes saw in my grandmother's house on Saturday afternoons. And I decided to go for the most emblematic of all types of Western scenes: the gun duel. I imagined anticipation, the hero and the bad guy making their appearances, the start of the duel, and the tension of waiting. After stumbling upon a decent theme, and writing a fair bit, I googled around for a clip, and I found one on YouTube (titled Duel - Professional Gun). To match music and images, I edited the clip a bit, and added quite a bit of music, as the clip was considerably longer than what I had written so far. I then "refactored" the music a bit (yes, I'm a computer scientist) to have the separate themes stand out more.

Originality wasn't my goal. If I had any goal, it was to reproduce the feeling from those old Westerns. Realism was not really a great concern either, but I think I've managed to get a decent sound, and pretty loud too. I've also tried to preserve the clip's original speech and a few sound effects, while cutting and eq'ing out the original underscore (by no-one less then Moricone), but the original's sound was quite bad.

So here it is. I hope it can live up to your memories and perhaps even bring back some of that Saturday afternoon at grandmother's feeling. Here is to fun and nostalgia.

PS this replaces one uploaded earlier, but the changes are minimal.

If anything that bullet would've hit maybe a lung, but he'd still live. His bullet on the other hand stuck the enemy's heart...

  • Great work! I agree with PoliticsAL and love the work! Keep going!

  • EXCELLENT work. I enjoyed that very much. The music fits right in with the feel of the video clip. If I'd heard that music in what was obviously a B western, possibly a spaghetti western, I would have believed it. It fits that well. So kudos to you, and thanks for that.
