The Hanging Temple is one of the most incredible sights I have ever seen. Built halfway up a sheer cliff face, the temple is anchored to the cliff walls on wooden posts set into the rock!

There are tall, narrow stairs and walkways connecting the six halls, caves and ledges with unique shrines to all of China's main religions. I gasped when the car pulled into the valley and saw the Hanging Temple, froze in the unseasonable cold and still can't believe that the wooden posts have held firm for over 1,500 years. What a sight...

  • Sorry but I don't remember. I was so freaked out climbing the skinny steps between the temple rooms, looking out over the void and it was bitter cold that day. If I had been smart, would have rented one of those long Chinese coats from one of the hawkers. It even started to snow later on that day.

  • Thanks for your comment. I didn't know that but do know that it was very scary standing on those little platforms. What an incredible feat though....building something like this.
