Something that bothers me is there are so many people claiming to live in an environmentally friendly way or in a sustainable way yet they still do many things that harm the earth. From what I've seen the best type of structure to build would be from earth. Cob, adobe, etc.. they are the materials you should use. Use as little wood as possible to build. Avoid nasty chemicals and live a sustainable life. A sustainable home with an unsustainable life is still unsustainable. Not sure about this vid

Wood is a perfect building material as long as the timber used is from sustainably managed forests. We don't use nasty chemicals because they would damage the Living Machine that processes our waste. In fact it is our lifestyle (localisation of food, transport, energy etc.) that has most helped to reduce our carbon footprint, giving us the lowest recorded eco-footprint in the industrial world.

However, we are still using 2.5 times our fair share of the earth's resources, so yes, we still have work to do, mostly to do with heating and flying. And we are doing that work, one of the reasons that we were cited as a worthy model in Tim Jackson's (the Sustainable Development Commissioner to the UK government) report Prosperity Without Growth.
