I think they're about falling down a hole with no escape but looking up to moments of true happiness and beauty. It was filmed around + in Flushing Meadows Park, NY.

@AlternativeUses Good point there in the beginning. Well said. Glad you didn't take it personally like others. So I will expand on my earlier comment. I have always loved this song. The New Order version is my favorite.  Didn't like JD's version as much. I'm one to pay more attention to the beat than the lyrics. That's just ME. So honestly the first time I read the entire lyrics was in this post. And I was thinking to myself how ironic that I love the song but hate the lyrics.
