The CA Lynx (also called Bobcat) was spotted in the field across the stream from my fenced yard. It is my neighbor, evidently I moved into it's territory. Since I started patrolling inside my fence, no more chickens have been lost (knock on wood).

It does look like a house cat, only about twice the size, and the short tail is a dead give-away. I've seen it in action and it is fast and furious. Sometimes the chicken will leave them with a mouth-full of feathers. The chicken's advantage is that when fightened their feathers can slide right off allowing them to slip out of the bite and grasp of a predator.

Music: Mozart, Rondeau from some Clarinet and Oboe piece of his.

  • Well, the food chain. This is a predator. And it will eat chickens if given the chance. This means The one who houses chickens is to stupid to house correctly. It is called survival of the fittest. Thanks

  • Too true, have heard of many who lost chickens and have wondered how they house their chickies. I used to do patrol of the fence line each morning and several times late afternoon after the attacks. The house was VERY secure, luckily. Thanks.

  • cute kittie..:)

Whups! I mean Nasty Evil Chicken-killer!

  • Both! Yup, just cuz it is a predator doesn't mean it isn't also really cool in its own right. I have a predator living indoors with me, my house cat, she toys with birds and mice but cuddles up and purrs on my lap. We are strange creatures, no?

  • How cool. Do they ever come after your chickens??

  • Yes, got three of them and I interrupted the fourth attempt to kill and the chicken lived. Nice to see it from a distance, instead of munching on a chickie (got one of my neighbor's too).

  • we need bobcats in Ohio, they are endangered

  • :-)

  • Indeed.

As a matter of fact, if you have ever kept a human male indoors you have lived with the most dangerous predator on the planet.

I've heard the theory that feline beauty and grace is a part of their hunting skill.

  • Thank you!
