May 14 marks the 62nd anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba (Catastrophe) and the beginning of the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian people. The repressive occupation continues today, enforced through policies reflective of the social, political, and economic segregation founded on race that was characteristic of apartheid South Africa. Apartheid in South Africa was dismantled after the international community began to BOYCOTT, DIVEST, and SANCTION the country. Taking from this legacy, it is time for a new movement for a generation of socially conscious people it is time to BOYCOTT, DIVEST, and SANCTION Israeli Apartheid and its ILLEGAL OCCUPATION of Palestine.

Omar Shakir is currently pursuing a masters degree in the Arab Studies Program at Georgetown Universitys School of Foreign Service, where he holds the prestigious Khaled Juffali Scholarship. As a Fulbright Scholar, Omar conducted research and published on the subject of contemporary economic reform in Syria. Omar earned his bachelors degree in international relations from Stanford University, where he graduated with honors. He has studied at Oxford University and in Morocco and Egypt, participated in volunteer programs in the West Bank, Jordan, and Syria, and interned with the National Endowment for Democracy. Omar is fluent in modern Arabic.
