@movinon04 When the comet is straight between us and the sun the only tail we're in is the ion tail, and as the name says it's just ionized particles, not debris.
When Elenin flies past our orbit in the end of Oct we will be in the debris tail but it will only give us a few more shooting stars if anything.

Why should CNN be interested (apart from maybe reporting on the crazy theories on th interwebs) in a small comet that we probably won't even be able to see with out naked eyes?
How can elenin slow down and be 46000 miles behind its original trajectory and then speed up to maintain the same time differential of approximately 10 minutes? Surely this slowing will compound over time and the elenin will continue to increase its lag distance making it cross the Earth's orbit path at a later date.

@katgolds30 The last Observation used by JPL to determine their solution was dated AUG 2nd, 2011. The MPC solution used much newer observations. The MPC Orbit places the Comet around 17 minutes later on the Close Approach date of 10/16. No compounding involved. You can find that at time mark 7:03 in the video.

@TBar1984 Thank you for your reply but I still find it rather odd that NASA, with so many observations including a close fly-by (Stereo B), could be so far off unless there has been a slowing down. Could the CME's that impacted The Elenin have had an impact on its velocity?

@katgolds30 I would love to know why JPL is not using any observations newer than Aug 2nd in their solutions. I thought it was a misprint last week, but, this week it is the same. I just plotted the MPC Orbit #2 from Jun 14th. The Comet is only 23,800km behind the MPC Jun 14th orbit on Oct 16th. So, according to the MPC, it's only around 8 minutes behind their last orbit data on Oct 16th.

@cornfeed34 The last I heard from Leonid was about two days ago in the Countdown to perihelion thread. His comment, "Nucleus was 2-4 km, now, perhaps smaller. Nothing follow this comet, this is rumors." I have been using 3km for a size in SNP.
