Reckoning with Torture: Memos and Testimonies from the "War on Terror"

In Doug Liman's film Reckoning with Torture: Memos and Testimonies from the "War on Terror," ordinary Americans stand side-by-side with actors, writers, and former military interrogators and intelligence officers in a reading of official documents that reveal the scope and cost of America's post-9/11 torture program.

Reckoning with Torture began as a collaborative project between the ACLU and Pen American Center that brought together the ACLU's leadership in the FOIA legislation and PEN's stature as an international voice of conscience. Past participants have included Robert Redford, America Ferrera, Don DeLillo, Paul Auster, A.M. Homes, Sandra Cisneros, Dianne Wiest, and many others. In 2010, director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Fair Game, Swingers) and producer Avram Ludwig joined the Reckoning with Torture team. For the first time since its inception, Reckoning with Torture will be performed by the American public in readings shot by citizen filmmakers across the country. Liman will intercut citizen submissions with footage from professionally staged performances to create a feature length movie starring our students, parents, friends and neighbors alongside some of our most prominent cultural figures, reading the documentary record of America's post-9/11 torture program.
