I don't think I would want to eat food that had been grown in something made of sulphur and synthetic textiles=petochemicals. The chemicals could leach into the food. It might be ok for flowers.

@stylus880 The laws in Australia are the same for the knives, only way you are meant to carry a knife on you is so it is not concealed, as in a pouch like he does. If you have in your pocket it's a different story.

Great idea, Mate. The only thing i would do is to add 4 or so holes regularly spaced around (in) the lower lip to allow drainage. Good luck...ps
If i wore a knife like that I would get arrested in Australia....Hope you never get our stupid laws.

Glad to see someone else had the same idea I did. I secured a large tire last summer and cut it just as you did to use as a compost bin. Time got tight and I didn't get around to it. Some other uses. Fill it half full of dirt/compost and plant lettuce, radishes, spinach and onions. Build a frame covered with plastic and lay over it when cold weather comes. Should create a mini climate and extend the growing season.Keep on thinking.

Tires don't leak petroleum just sitting around. The only way the petroleum gets out is if you burn them which is fun but not a good idea.
There is almost no petroleum in tires. They are mainly made up of latex (tree sap) some synthetic rubber, carbon, sulphur, steel and some synthetic textiles. The synthetic textiles would contain more petroleum byproducts than the rest of the tire combined. They are they same kinds of materials that people wear in their clothes all the time. The fear of chemicals leaching out of tires is completely irrational. There are rubber seals inside the taps for your drinking water too.

Thanks. It is very common to use old tyres for potatoes. Bamboo varieties can be chosen which are not as invasive & you could then harvest for garden stakes etc, rather than having to buy them:)

I have some small bamboo now... But what i am going to be doing is using all the tree limbs that i have to build stuff like... Trellises, Fences, Gates, what ever i can build with them... Just use what i have on the property...
