I was planning another BK compilation and it would feature this trick, but I don't know when I'm going to get around to recording all the stuff for that. I already had footage for this, so I figure temporarily uploading it now can't hurt.
When Banjo is on or over a slope, his "slide meter" starts counting down. When that hits zero, he will automatically slide down the next slippery surface he comes in contact with. People familiar with Mumbo's Mountain without termite may remember the basis for this trick: by fluttering over flat land after jumping off a slope, you can reset the slide meter and continue your trek upwards.
However, getting to the top requires way more than this simple trick. After a certain point, the time it takes to flutter from over flat ground to the upper part of the slope is enough so that upon landing you instantly slide and cannot jump away. To reach the top, you have to get as close to this point as possible for height, then flutter to a different slope on the back of the island. You will be forced to slide down, but if you are high enough you can recover and feathery flap just after falling off the edge. With the right angle, this will force you onto the back ledge. From there, repeat the slope climbing trick to the top, since the distance between flat ground (well, water) and the top of the slope is much less.
