Hardly near-lost. There are a good number of people using draught horses for logging. It's a job that some horses seem particularly to enjoy, and there is apparently enough demand that several loggers have waiting lists. The skills the horse and driver need are pretty much the same as for wagon driving. Among the Amish and in Eastern Europe driving has never gone out of style. If you wish to learn, the teachers, horses, and equipment are available.

How wonderful that there is an institute of higher learning dedicated to preserving this near-lost knowledge! ^_^

Agreed, yet it is difficult to locate willing farmers and loggers who have enough time to properly teach skills in a progression--here is where we fill a niche. Given the new economy, agriculture practitioners in Northern Vermont are analyzing the power systems on their farms and looking for ways to trim the overhead. The strenght of our program lies in the daily immersion of care and work with the horses--something a don't think can be captured in a short weekend or short course.
