@Nicocodu57 Do remember that Iluvatar is the one God in Tolkien's myth. Valar are the powers of Arda, while the Maiar are lesser gods (less powerful than the Valar). You say the rule is that Gandalf musn't fight Sauron. Don't you think this is also the case w/ Dumbledore? Even if his powers are greater than Voldemort's (dumbledore has elder wand - the strongest wand there is), he is not the one DESTINED to defeat him. Remember the prophecy? Like Gandalf, his task is to HELP.. Harry.

Mrskittleface it's not just a long sword it's glamdring crafted by the elves and one of the most powerful swords in middle earth.

Dumbledore wins because gandalf was only sent back because the ring was not destroyed... now it is if he dies hes just dead. also both wizards fight with the most powerful evil wizard they know and out of the two only Dumbledore wins. also Gandalf died already and so has Dumbledore, only differance is Dumbledore chose to die and Gandalf (first time round) did not choose. End of Dumbledore would win.

@TheKingjaredeb notice how i said that most of his POTENTIAL power comes from his wand. theres no way in hell a few magic tricks without that poor, uninnovative excuse for a power catalyst will be able to even hurt him. and just cause the damn phoenix comes back doesnt mean it'll be able to do anything, why? cause it'll be just a hatchling, a baby, whats a baby bird gonna do?, barf on him?. and gandalf just has a simple long sword, the only thing making his sword deadly is him.

I think a main factor is how powerful the elder wand is compared to the staff of Gandalf. Plus Dumbledore has the killing curse which I don't believe exists in Tolkien's stories.

@MrSkittlesauce he doesn't necessarily need his wand cause a few times they used magic without their wand and i would think a wand that belonged to death would be able to supersede he powers of a demigod. the phoenix...well anyone could strike it down but it would just come back. Now for the sword...what else is there to say when a sword can absorb anything that is stronger than it to make itself stronger. from what i know Gandalf can't use his powers without his staff.
