Most people in Mott Haven live under the poverty line of the U.S., so for them the recession has been a constant struggle for as long as they can remember. But what happens to those that only work in Mott Haven?

Ben Schwartz owns and runs Wassaic Community Farm. The farm is now in its second year of providing quality food to the community of Mott Haven in the South Bronx. Ben believes that wholesome fresh food should be available for all.

In doing so he tills his quarter acre that houses a raised bed garden and 3 acre plot within walking distance of a train line to NYC. The farm grows a variety of vegetables and herbs using organic and permaculture techniques.

Every Wednesday Ben wakes up early and commute by rail to the Padre Plaza Success Garden in the Mott Haven Section of the South Bronx. There he educates the residents in the use of herbs to treat ailments until they can get proper medical attention.

However, been has not bee immune to collapse of the economy. We caught up with Ben to see how the recession has personally impacted him.
