Here is a simple demonstration of Kumihimo Braiding. There are several samples of Kumihimo braid necklaces, with bead collage pendants, at the end.

  • Generally, for thin cord as in crochet threads I double the length that I want my finished piece to be and this gives enough extra length to finish the braid. With thicker cord as in satin cord or ribbon I found that eight strands of 50" long produced a 17" braid. Generally the thicker cords produce a shorter finished length than do the thinner cords.Hope this helps!

  • can u show me how to finish the project? how do i put the end pieces on? Thank you.

  • @kgraley99 LYTHASTUDIOS on YouTube has many ways to finish your kumihimo braid. I cannot put the actual link in this message as it is not allowed. Also google "Finishing Kumihimo Braids with Cord End Caps " and it will be the first link. That is my favorite. Good luck with your necklace. Thanks for watching and trying this!

Thank you for the info... very good!!! Can a 10 foot cord be made using the disk or would I need a marudai? Thank you!

  • @rosewood24 Hi! Yes, if you use a thin yarn or string and large bobbins, I think you could make it work. It might be bulky at the beginning, but it will get easier as you go along. Good Luck!

  • I LOVE YOUR WORK AN INSTRUCTION YOU MAKE IT SO EASY...THANKS

  • @vidaholmes Hello! Thank you so much for this kind comment. I am making a red Kumihimo braid now using red crochet thread. I hope to use it as a Christmas necklace and bracelet set.

  • How long should the string be?

  • Hello! Wow you are fast! In a nutshell for thin cord as in crochet threads I double the length that I want my finished piece to be and this gives enough extra length to finish the braid. With thicker cord as in satin cord or ribbon I found that eight strands of 50" long produced a 17" braid. • Nevermind Rosie, I looked through the other comments and found the information I needed to know regarding how much cord to use for projects.

  • Rosie, this was soooo very helpful for me to understand how to get a braid started!! I love your necklaces and handmade pendants, beautiful!! Could you please tell how much (length of cord) to make an 18" necklace and a 7 1/2" bracelet, I would hate to get started on a project and come up short or wasting cord. I wanted to try something other than macrame, I can't wait to get started. I'll be using 2mm hemp cord. thanks again!

  • love it. thanks :)
