Ok, I have a weird question. One pc which I bought years ago with dual core 2,4 GHz was not capable to run many programs because the cpu usage was high (50-90%). I had no trojans, viruses etc in my harddrive. So I bought a new cpu 3.0 GHz dual core with 6 mb cache, but haven't installed it yet. One dude said that if I installed the new cpu ít wouldn't make my computer run smoother and that the cpu wouldn't do any difference at all. Is he right?
@Zomb1fic4ion no i don't. i'm pretty sure you'd have to update the bios but that's only if you're upgrading the motherboard also. but i'm not really sure.
@RapierMedia It CAN be done without removing the motherboard, but it's wise to take out the Motherboard so you have easier access to the heatsink fan and the CPU.
However, if you can easily access them without damaging or straining any other parts of your computer, then by all means do it. :)
P.s that was not me it was my dad fyi i have a 4 core AMD phenom x4 950

If replacing a processor on my Compaq computer, you reccomend taking the motherboard out. But can it be done without removing the motherboard?
I have little computer maintenance experience, and i'd probably not know how to put cables back in.

I see that computer has Vista, an OS upgrade to Win7 or WinXP is a better fix if your using Vista xD

I'd like to upgrade my Pentium 4 computer (prescott)'s processor to either an Intel Core 2 Duo or Pentium Dual Core. What do you guys prefer?
