Don't undersell or oversell music theory. It's important - yes. But you can know all the theory in the world and if you can't use it, what good is it? Vai is so good because he knows the theory and how to apply it. Yes you can just play from the heart but if you can do it whilst changing from E Lydian to E minor why not do that as well? Oh sorry did I ruin your pre-pubescent argument, my bad.

@rickyjshiznit Excuse me, but EVH studied classical piano before he even picked up guitar. Him and Alex were both pianists when they were boys, so with that much time with CLASSICAL MUSIC under his belt, I'd say he could "compose a piece for an 8 year old's piano recital."
