  • I plan on updating all of my mics as money permits and then moving on to pres, but it seems to get 8 high end channels alone can be upwards of $800+ per channel. I read a great review on the True Systems. Would you recommend it for the price? There's just so much out there, both gear-wise and opinions that it gets frustrating since you can't really try anything without taking the plunge and buying it... so, again thanks for your input and hope I'm not taking up too much of your time!

  • @cwoguinn The True stuff is all really great; seriously well made and it sounds excellent. They tend towards the "clean" side of audio and I prefer things a bit more "characterful" which is why I like transformers and overdriving them. :-)

You can hear stuff I've done at my website (dongunn.com) - it's in need of updating on the news page, but I've been so busy that I keep putting it off. Pretty much any of my work that you can hear is engineering/mixing rather than drumming.

  • I'm curious on your signal path... I notice you have an API and a True Systems 8 channel pre. What pres do you prefer on your drums; kick/snare/toms/kick/OHs/rooms. And mics, if you don't mind...

I'm in the process of expanding my setup and am set on the M179s for my toms, mostly because of your videos and some reviews I've read on them. Your drum sounds are great from kit to kit and I know there are so many factors... thanks for your posts and any info you can give is truly appreciated!!

  • @cwoguinn A bunch (all?) of my preamps have changed since this vid. I now have 8 Classic Audio Products of Illinois VP26 preamp kits that I built, two channels of the new Chameleon Labs 581 and two Shiny Box Si4 4-channel pre's. So, 18 channels with different flavors.

I really like the VP26s on toms because the transformers saturate in a really pleasing way. I tend to use the Shiny Box pre's on the kick and snare mics because the pre's are really "fast" - the transient detail is amazing.

  • @cwoguinn And lately, I've been using the 581's on overheads. Preamps for room mics I'll mix and match depending on the kind of sound I'm going for. Most of the time I'm recording others, not myself, so my choices are largely dictated by the style of music and sound the artist is looking for.

  • @cwoguinn As far as mics go, I like to change those around, too, just to keep from getting stale. When I'm working in other studios I constantly try things I've never used before because it keeps me on my toes and I may stumble upon a combination I've never used before and suddenly really like it.

  • Wow, thanks for the info... I'd love to hear some more of your work... any websites you'd like to mention to hear your work? What studio do you work at/own?

Would you recommend any (budget+ level) pres/converters? I currently have a Presonus Firepod with some Audix drum mics, a few Rode condensers. So everything is pretty budget level stuff.

  • @humanonthetube

Thanks! I no longer have the kit (but I sold it to a friend, so I know where it is!) - I've been looking at some WFL and other 3-ply kits as a replacement.

  • Great sound! I have a 1969 edition, 12, 14, 20 and 14 inch snare..Tight little kit you have there, and I dig your playing!! Nice post...

  • @delijica

The rack tom is an Evans coated G1 on top and bottom, floor tom is coated G2 top, coated G1 bottom, and the kick is an EMAD2 batter and Onyx reso.

    Thanks!
