watch very carefully The leaders of Canada's three opposition parties have asked US President Barack Obama to return Canadian Omar Khadr from Guantanamo.

"The interests of justice require acknowledgement of his status as a child soldier, his release from Guantanamo Bay, and his prompt return to Canada to be dealt with in accordance with Canadian law," the politicians wrote in a letter to Obama.

Khadr was 15 when he was arrested for allegedly killing a US soldier in Afghanistan and transferred to the detention center at the US naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Khadr's military trial was suspended last month at the request of Obama, who pledged to close the controversial "war-on-terror" prison. However, Khadr, now 22, remains incarcerated.

Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff is scheduled to meet with Obama when he visits Canada on Feb.19, his office said.

"Significant ambiguity exists as to what role (Khadr) played in connection with the conflict (in Afghanistan) and whether he is guilty of any criminal misconduct," opposition parties wrote. "It is unequivocal that the previous US administration disregarded his status as a child soldier."

"It is also clear that Mr. Khadr has been subjected to conditions of confinement and interrogation that Canadian courts have found violate international prohibitions against torture and other forms of cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment."
