This is a video regarding simple things to help you absorb and retain heat in your box oven or panel cooker.

In solar cooking, you must have:

1. A way to hold heat, this is where insulation comes in.
2. A way to ABSORB heat, this is done by using black utensils.
3. A way to RETAIN heat, this is done through using items that once they absorb heat, they will begin to radiate heat to the cooking vessel.

Many of these items you will have on hand in your kitchen but can be found on the cheap at yard sales, value city, family dollar, dollar tree, goodwill and salvation army thrift stores.

Absorbing and retaining heat is important especially if you have some clouds roll through and block the sun for more than 5 minutes at a time. Its backup heat to help keep food cooking.

  • LOL, thanks! I wish it had a way for me to put it on a tripod so I can have hands free demonstrations, but hey, the price was right and its better than 60 seconds!

    Thanks for watching!

  • I am still working on the adjustments with the lighting, but, its better than the still camera and I have more time to give some more detailed information. Takes alot longer to download on youtube though, :(

  • Matt black absorbs (and radiates!) best. Silvered absorbs least. For capacity of absorption we need mass (kg) Tiles and stone is good, and steel. the steel also easily transfers the heat through itself from hotter to cooler.... Keep up the good work!

  • Thanks fore all this great information!

  • Very informative. ^.^

  • Nice job, solarcookingnut! I'm the 'local expert' in my area, and I learned from this one. I'm doing pretty well with my box oven (bottom plate is 18-gauge cold-rolled steel, painted black, sitting on narrow cardboard strips over the foiled cardboard), but I was wondering if I needed air under the food, too. I checked, and we DID keep the plates from the old waffle iron that died!;) I love all the ways solar cooking and recycling go hand-in-hand!

  • wooo hooo! this was really informative. maybe one of these days i will give solar cooking a try! thank you!

  • hooray for the new camera!
