Understanding the Risks of Breast Implants

In any major or minor surgical procedures, there are always associated risks such the effects of anesthesia, redness, bleeding, infection, swelling and some complications arising from the implant itself. In this article, we're going to discuss these complications among other things.
Capsular contracture. This usually occurs when the scar tissue or the capsule around the implant squeezes and tightens the implant. Correction includes another surgery to remove the implant capsule or replacing the whole implant itself. This remedy is not final however, because contraction is still possible after the surgery.
Rupture or Deflation. The silicone gel-filled implant could rupture at any time deforming the implant's shape and size bringing pain, tenderness, tingling, and numbness, swelling and burning sensations to the patient. Apparently, some patients would not suspect any leaking because there are no symptoms manifested. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) fitted for breast scanning is used to detect implant rupture or leaking. Surgeons will usually recommend the removal of the said implant to prevent leaking to surrounding tissues. In the case of saline-based implants, the leaking could take days, months or even years. Additional surgery is needed to retrieve the deflated implant.
Pain. Many women experience varying pains after the surgery. Other factors such as capsular contracture, improper size, implant placement and surgical techniques can give rise to pain. If you feel pain, tell your doctor immediately.
Unsatisfied with the end-result. There's always the possibility that you get the least of your expectations. Uneven or incorrect size, implant shifting, scarring or deformity may occur. Such surgeries are carried out carefully but still do not offer 100% guarantee. Corrective surgeries are performed to improve the breast appearance and feel.
Infection. Such infections are harder to treat as compared to common infections because sometimes they do not respond to antibiotics. Corrective measure includes removal of the implant after the infection has subsided.
Hematoma or Seroma. Hematoma is the formation of the blood in a cavity, and Seroma is the formation of the water portion of the blood across the implant. When this happens, the patient will feel pain, swelling and bruising. The body absorbs small hematomas and seromas but large ones need surgical drains to accelerate healing.
On top of that, a patient may experience change in the nipples and breast sensation, calcium deposits around the implant, unable to heal the surgery wounds faster, extrusion, necrosis, tissue atrophy and interference in mammography (necessary for early breast cancer detection).
