Found this recipe in a recipe book called "Desserts from the Famous Loveless Cafe". I ate at the Loveless Cafe in Tennessee on a recent trip and tried this pie there and LOVED it!! This homemade version tastes exactly the same.
** I am bound to get comments about the alcohol in this pie. Yes you can leave it out, but it won't taste like Steeplechase pie if you do**

1 1/4 cup pecan pieces
1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
9 inch pie shell partially baked
3/4 cup white sugar
6 tablespoons butter, melted
2 tablespoons of whiskey, such as Jack Daniel's
1 tsp vanilla extract
3 eggs
3/4 cup light corn syrup

Place chocolate chips and pecan pieces in the bottom of the prebaked pie crust **NOTE I have made this without pre-baking the crust and it was fine**

Put the sugar in a mixing bowl, add the melted butter, whiskey and vanilla and whisk to combine. Add the eggs one at a time mixing well after each addition. Add the corn syrup and whisk until blended. Pour this mixture over the nuts and chips in the pie shell.

Se the pie on a sturdy baking sheet in the middle of the oven and bake for 50-55 minutes until the filling puffs up a bit and is set across the top of the pie. Let cool completely before cutting.

  • Welcome back Yoyomax's chefs! I'm just thinking-Is Max 18 or older to drink alcohol yet?...I'm taking the alcohol out for sure!

  • @AnimeSisterForever There is 2 tablespoons in an entire pie that serves 6-8 people. That wouldn't hurt anybody no matter how old they are. Max loved it.

  • ooooo i would love to try this but has anyone made this without the pecans...maybe sub a different nut??? im not a fan of pecans...any suggestions?

  • @PinkGlitteryStars You could sub walnuts easily and it would still taste very good

I'm sure someone has already said it - but in the interest of making sure, I'll tell you too.

Alcohol, when baked emparts it's flavour, but the cooking process causes the alcohol to evaporate.

With this amount of alcohol, is miniscule anyways. But after baking? It's be non-existant.

(Now if there was a whole bottle of sherry in something, then you *might* have to worry, because larger volumes of alcohol mean longer cook times prior to full evaporation)
