These are the cameras that I have used over the years to take photos and video.
[Canon PowerShot S40]
The Brick... one of the older cameras of the bunch. It was my original camera for video shooting to make my videos here on YouTube. I obtained this in 2006, well my mom actually got it at a yard sale used, but with the original box and accessories for $10. This camera has had so much use over the years... it died 2 days before this video was made It was a great camera loaded with features. It was probably a very expensive camera back in it's day.
[Kodak EasyShare CD40]
The Cheap Spare... an older camera that my grandpa found somewhere. this camera is probably a little newer than the Brick, because it takes SD memory. It does not include many options, like macro for close-up focusing. It has an auto mode and manual mode for photo taking, and a video mode for videos. The video mode uses video-jpeg, so it does not have sound in the video. It is good for taking to places like the beach, where it can be a bit risky for other cameras with retractable lens.
[DXG 305V]
The Take Along for the bike... a camera which is a bit cheaply made... overpriced in my opinion. The good thing though is that it is slim and doesn't have a retractable lens, and it comes with a little case that I was able to glue to the handlebar of my road bike as a holder for the camera to take it along for the ride. Though since i has poor video quality... I no longer used it for shooting long videos(other than bike rides) once I obtained the next camera below...
[Traveler DC9900]
The Aldi Camera... a camera that has some issues with focusing, color and everything else. It can never focus in on close up, or far away items. The lens of the camera are well capable of getting the right focus, but the firmware doesn't guide them right. The modes for shooting are some of the weirdest I've ever seen. If I were to actually use this camera to take all sorts of various photos... and if I were to use the designated mode for all those different pictures, I'd be spending more time switching modes than taking pictures. This camera includes the normal modes in the "manual" department, but it does not have an AUTO mode! Here's all the different modes...
User Setting, Program AE, Smile Shot, Anti Shake, Portrait Man, Portrait Lady, Landscape, Sports, Night Portrait, Night Scene, Candlelight, Fireworks, Text, Sunset, Sunrise, Splash Water, Flow Water, Snow, Beach, Pets, Natural Green.
The video quality of the camera is acceptable only in high-light conditions. There are a lot of times where I have to brighten up the video using movie maker. The audio on the camera is horrible. You can only hear close-up things. I'm sure a lot of people who watched videos made with this camera had to turn up the volume... If this camera had a better firmware for it that knows how to focus the lens, that has more down to earth array of photo options... including AUTO, a firmware that knows how to properly balance the colors and brightness, and can take better quality video with sound that can actually be decently heard by the human ears and actually compress the files down to size... it would actually be a great camera.
My new camera: [Canon PowerShot A470]
The successor to the Brick... Grandpa's slightly used camera handed down to me... due to the Brick's death. Grandpa has resorted back to his Sony Mavica camera which is over 10 years old and uses 1.44MB floppy disks! He loves that old camera because it is simple to use for what he uses it for.
The PowerShot A470 carries on Canon's great reputation of good quality cameras. This camera has 2 photo modes to choose from... auto and manual. Other options can be set using the on-screen menu. This camera is easy to use, is fast acting, and takes great quality photos! The video mode on it is outstanding was well. It isn't HD, but it does outstanding for 640x480 resolution. The audio sounds great as well. This is a camera that offers a lot for the price... and $10-%$25 more than the Aldi camera.
