"Moth Around the Flame" by Heitor Villa-Lobos. Audio Only. Heifetz with the Bell Telephone Hour Orchestra conducted by Donald Voorhees (1943)
It seems Heifetz never recorded this "perpetual motion" style piece which I find shares similarities with "Waves at Play" by Grasse, (which Heifetz did record). Enjoy!

  • I don't know why my comment was removed. I inquired about the source of this recording. I once owned it and donated it to a conservatory library that does not seem to have it today.

  • @beautman1 I was going to respond to your comment but it was already gone. I have had the recording for much more than 5 years, if that's any help. Was it just this one piece or was there more?

  • @beautman1 Much appreciation-You saved some real treasures and it still shocks me that things like these can be thrown away. The non-commercial cd this piece came from was a continuous recording of an entire B.T.R.H show. I haven't seen the Villa-Lobos on cd release either.

  • @beautman1 They needed to be preserved before they further decomposed and I found I lacked the gumption to transfer and clean them up myself so I donated them to a conservatory libary in 2005. Over the past several years, someone has been issuing CDs of Heifetz' performances on B.T.R.H., but I do not believe this piece has been included, and I'm not aware of anyone else ever having recorded it either.

  • @sneddley Thank you sneddley. This is an air check from the Bell Telephone Radio Hour, as your probably know. I saved 20 home insta-disc recordings (40 sides) from a scrap heap. The recordings were all from 40-41, and this was among the best of them. There were other Heifetz recordings, as well as Szigeti and other celebrated violinists of there era, but many had poor speed regulation, and many were growing noisy because of chemical decomposition of the lacquer. (con't)

  • It appeared in my violin teachers collection and I know not who sent it to him. The other item I am not aware of anywhere else is of Heifetz w/The Bell Telephone Orch./Vorhees playing "The Star Spangled Banner" which I have also posted.

  • My error in not mentioning Villa-Lobos (in last reply): without his brilliant musical creativity there would have been no "moth" at all!
