@mattijnf I'm probably way off but for what it's worth here's my interp... A man has been exiled from society for whatever reason and is sent to live in the wilderness. It is only from this side of the fence that he can see the damage done by industrialism and the like, and now neither society nor the earth wishes to sustain him. I see the end as a symbol for rebirth and always being able to create a new mindset and grow as a person.
