"Paseábase el rey moro"
Romance, s. XVI Spain
Arranged by Vicente Chavarría
This "romance" tells the tale of a Moorish king, to whom messengers come and relay the sad news of the fall of Alhama. It was so popular in the early sixteenth century that local authorities forbade its singing in the streets, as it tended to incite local violence. Luys de Narváez penned a famous setting of it for voice and Renaissance guitar in his "Libros del Delfín".
