Well said. It's mostly non-musicians who engage in "who's better" discussion. Music enjoyment is subjective. Certainly there are better and worse players, technically, but when a musician reaches a certain level of facility, it becomes a moot argument. At the level of an Eric Johnson, Paul Gilbert or Neal Schon, there isn't a better, just a more preferred.

These wonderful players should be cherished for their talents and not belittled with immature competition. Truly.

It just goes to show you that professional guitarists all respect each other, and they will never compare themselves to another player or declare themselves better than anyone else. They all realize that people play in different styles and that there is no better or worse.

My brother and I called up Mike Varney after he put out US Metal Vol 1, and sure enough, he played us a tape of Shawn Lane over the phone too! I couldn't comprehend the technique at all at the time. I just knew he was the fastest player I'd ever heard, and clean, and just insanely great technically above the 12th fret, wide intervals, chromatics, insane whole-tone runs.I had a student who later went on the take lessons from Paul Gilbert, and he said Gilbert really looked up to Lane.

I would love to have Shawns talent, I don't prefer his style of music but his knowledge and technique are about unsurpassed. I just wish I could get into his music so it wouldn't be such a exercise for me to try and learn something from him.
