EDMONTON -- The pre-game hype was all on top draft pick Taylor Hall, but it was the guy drafted the year before that stole the show for the Edmonton Oilers.

Rookie Magnus Paajarvi, selected 10th overall in the 2009 entry draft, scored a hat trick and added an assist in an impressive Oilers debut as Edmonton defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-2 in their pre-season home opener on Thursday.

"It felt awesome to be able to do what I did out there in my first game," said Paajarvi. "It's just unbelievable to be here and playing with NHL players. I'm still taking it all in. I already feel very comfortable. All credit to my linemates. They are great to play with. Today was a great day for the whole team."

still cant believe oilers got this kid!! he was a steal in the draft! and i knew he was gonna be a big impact player to any team he played for! but i'm an oil fan and glad he's and Oiler! =) i dont think oil will win the cup this year but they sure made the right moves with getting new coaching staff and getting young talent like Eberle, Hall, Plante. this should be a good season for them thats for sure!

hes not a very good goalie man haha i watch the oilers all the time he was gifted with being 6foot5 and skinny thats the main reason he would ever be good haha if hes 6 feet tall hed be terrible

Well actually if u pay attention its not him,he makes lots of saves,but the reason he loses is the D gives the other team too many shots..

no prolly like 3 bro,it only takes like 3-4 seasons for a rookie to go pro on the NHL.. in 3 years Eberle and hall will be 25 and RNH will be 22 or 23,and yakupov is allready great,and we also have good guns like experienced Sam Gagner and Hemsky are still good power forwards... We just need some D thats our problem..

From watching Oil Change, it looks like he kind of got lost in the shuffle with all the #1 picks and Eberle. He looked like he kind of fell in with the third-line jokesters and grinders and didn't really have that top-line competitive mentality. Hope that changes because he has the ability to be a special player if he can refocus himself and make the strides you'd expect from such a high pick.
