i have a qb78 xp tuned witch puts out around 770 fps with .177 and I use silver arrow pellets. i can kill a seagull or a squirrel from 30 yards . Clean instant kill from any place i shoot. The point is massive internal organ damage can caused by any pellet. if you hunt there is nothing to e humane about. Your ending a another creatures life that you had no business taking in the first place. FYI again, if you don't head shot its a living hell as there brain slowly dies!

I've dropped a turkey with my remington black magic with one shot

i believe all the comments are from people in america who can legally buy an air rifle over 12 fp of energy. i live in scotland i have 2 pcp air rifle which have exactly the same velocity 710 fps one is 177 the other is 22 i kill rabbits at forty yards with the 177 and fifty with the 22 all kill straight away unless i miss the logic you have about caliber should only be applied for heart and lung shots and even though 177 are faster they lose their fps faster than 22

i use a 1000 fps air rifle .177 cal with hollow points and i shot a rabbit in the head and found the pellet in the stomach

I have a Gamo Hornet and It's 1200 fps. What pellet should I use?

@swebbie Actually to correct you, Not all pointed pellets are bad for hunting.(I.E) Predator PolyMags©.
PolyMags© are the best hunting pellets made, The actually lead shelling around the tip mushrooms around the impact while lauching the polymer tip into the body destroying any internals in its way and exits the body. The entry wound is big and the exit wound is even bigger! Therefore these pellets are best for hunting. Also Gamo© RedFire and BlueFire include polymer tips. Good Day to you Sir!

I'm a bit tired of people advocating expensive, high velocity, pellet rifles as the only option for hunting or pest control. During my youth decades ago, many (including myself) routinely used far less powerful pellet & BB guns to successfully hunt birds and squirrels, or eliminate pests. Most relatively inexpensive midrange (400-750 fps) .177 pellet guns today are far more powerful than those years ago, yet many today still insist they cannot or should not be used. Hogwash is my reply to that.

i disagree with what you are saying about the fps, i use a 11.4 ft/lb of energy which i think is producing around about 600-750 fps im not sure because i have never tested it but i will soon, i can cleanly and humanely dispatch pigeons, crows, rats, magpies and other animals like that. just thought i would tell you all that before you try and buy a 1000 fps air rifle, odviously it is better to have a 1000 fps air rifle but not always neccesary, anyway gr8 vid :)

I've got a beeman 1041 and I haven't gone hunting yet cause I didn't know what to shoot and now that I saw your vid I'm sure to know what to shoot now:) great vid

Thank you. i was looking for serious information about hunting pellets. Nice article.
you just denied everything i thought about the tip pointed bullets... i always thought it was about a clean through hit but i guess your way makes mor sence

Pointed pellets help with accuracy (especially at lower FPS muzzle velocities). So it's a bit of a trade-off, depending on your own skills. If you're shooting at targets that are stationary and you can get close, take the head shot and use pretty much any pellet you want. But to be a better hunter and get more clean kills, I recommend a scope and heavy hollow points. Once a hollow point enters the body it usually blossoms out and tumbles. This causes massive internal damage, which is good.

I went up to palmdale desert today with my gamo big cat 1200, i used lead pointed pellets which go 1000 fps instead of 1200 fps if i woulda used my pba ammo( but i have less than 50). I really saw not much birds. i was just destroying targets haha. Do you have any info of hunting with a gamo big cat 1200? Im using RWS SuperPoint Extra 4.5 mm cal .177.

Gamo makes some nice rifles. Very accurate. If you're gonna hunt with any .177 caliber gun, I'd highly recommend a heavier hollow point pellet with any gun that fires at 1000fps. That's plenty of speed, but you risk only maiming anything with any size to it that you don't hit right in the head or through the heart or lungs. Higher FPS helps with accuracy at distance (usually), but can also cause more pass-throughs, where your pellet does not cause enough internal damage without a head shot.
