@myteric117 Another way could be (using gloves of course) letting the fighters use other techniques like shutos, kakutos, nukites, projections, etc... in a controlled and soft mode. That's how i think the Jiyu kumite is taken, you'll be able to use what you actually learned in katas and kihon.

The Seishin Shotokan Karate isn't my club or my style, but its website offers a good explanation of the different applications of jiyu-kumite. Many other sites define/translate shiai as "a contest," originally in judo, but later in other martial arts. I suggest that what is at issue is a matter of translation or of terminology.

errr... thats defenitely not jiyu kumite... its shiai kumite, or his other worldwide-known name, sport karate ^^
