The Beatmen (1962-1966) were a Bratislava-based band fronted by guitarist (and later, singer) Dežo Ursiny. Like most beat groups in the Soviet bloc, they started out playing cover versions - this one surprisingly sung in Slovak. They released only 4 songs before defecting to West Germany in order to achieve commercial success. Ursiny chose to stay behind, and founded the Soulmen. He went on to have a successful solo career playing progressive rock, fusion, and avantgarde pop, before succumbing to throat cancer in 1995.
