On May 13th, 2000, Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, OH, unveiled a roller coaster the likes have never been seen. They dubbed this ride Millennium Force. Standing 310ft tall, with a 300ft drop, and reaching speeds of 93 mph, Millennium Force was the biggest and fastest coaster in the world. Today, ten years later, it still ranks in the top two.

Built by coaster manufacturer Intamin rides out of Switzerland, Millennium Force was the first coaster to be called a "Giga" coaster, due to it's height in excess of 300 feet. Millennium Force broke twelve records at the time it opened:

* First ever complete circuit roller coaster to top 300 feet (91 m)

* Tallest complete circuit roller coaster (310 feet (94 m))

* Longest drop on a complete circuit roller coaster (300 feet (91 m))

* Fastest complete circuit roller coaster (92 miles per hour (148 km/h))

* Steepest non-inversion banked turn on a roller coaster (122°)

* First roller coaster in the United States to utilize a cable lift system

* First roller coaster at Cedar Point to feature magnetic braking system

* Most rides at an amusement park (68/75)

* Most roller coasters at an amusement park (14/17)

* Most steel roller coasters at an amusement park (12/15)

* Most feet of roller coaster track at an amusement park (44,013ft/53,963ft)

* Most roller coasters over 200 feet high at an amusement park

Ride Layout:
While the train is being loaded in the station, the catch car for the cable lift descends the lift and latches onto the middle car of the train. Once the train is cleared, the cable lift pulls the train up a 45 degree lift hill at 15 miles per hour to a height of 310 feet. After reaching the top, the train drops 300 feet down at an 80 degree angle and reaches a top speed of 93 miles per hour at the bottom of the hill. It then climbs 169 feet through a right overbanked turn at 122 degrees from the horizontal axis, then travels through a tunnel as it passes over the Frontier Trail midway. It then travels over a 182-foot parabolic hill, which provides a moment of airtime (zero G-forces) as it passes over a lagoon and down onto Millennium Island. While on Millennium Island, the train completes a 105-foot, 360-degree, right-handed helix, followed by a left overbanked turn and then a small right-hand turn before traveling over another airtime hill to exit the island. After exiting the island, the train travels left through a second tunnel followed by a left turn and a small airtime hill, passing by the queue. Finally, the train travels 68 feet high through another right overbanked turn over the queue and is brought to a stop by magnetic brakes.

Millennium Force is truly an astounding piece of Engineering.

  • i don't know if its just me but towards the end of the ride on the fly by of the station there is a huge yellow support there, just to let you know.

  • @DorneyPark5 That is the canopy for passengers leaving the ride.

  • Could you give me more detailed instructions on how to get the file to work on a Mac. I downloaded it from coaster crazy and read to to install it. I tried to do what you said, but it did not work. Also, do you need 3DS Max? I would appreciate it if you could answer my question.

  • @BleckerProductions You do not need 3ds Max to run the file. I have no idea how to do things on a Mac, but the folder setup should be similar.

  • MILENIUM FORCE GOES 93 MPH

  • @calicofan998 and is also spelled "Millennium"

  • @ciciGuys Actually, you're wrong too. If you watch an oride POV of Millennium Force, you will see that depending on the height above the ground and the forces involved, as AyTrane told me, the track will change between box shaped and triangular, as does his recreation.

I see i'm not the only one who replied to this comment but they are right. MF's supports (for the lift hill) from the ground to half way up it's triangular, from the top to other half is rectangular.

  • About the banked turn before the final brake you smoothed it out much better than the real thing! =) I like this person's way of thinking like "Perfection doesn't come as long as I go on building mines."

  • this is like spot on, from the track to the enviroment... Good Job!!

  • you should be hired by a roller coaster company to do concept animations if you haven't already...just saying. That was absolutely AMAZING to watch. Perfect.
