Judy Garland only performed "Over The Rainbow" twice during her many television appearances, which spanned 14 years. She performed it on her first TV Special, "Ford Star Jubilee" in the episode called "The Judy Garland Special" in 1955, and sang it to her children on The Christmas Edition of her weekly TV show "The Judy Garland Show" (1963).

Here Judy is dressed up as the tramp character she played when doing a duet with Fred Astaire in the film 'Easter Parade'.

Judy sings the song so sad and mournfully here it makes me cry, and it makes Judy cry too. We can only wonder what she was thinking about that got her so upset. Perhaps she was thinking about how different her life was compared to the song's lyrics. It's very upsetting. I love you Judy.

  • This song belongs to no one except Judy. It is her song, and only hers.

  • @getdjman Amen :)

  • Why Liza and Lorna don't want to sing this song? I've never heard it of them, I don't see it wrong. Only that since so many singers have covered it, the most entitled and could do when they want are her daughters. Isn't?

  • @Lealonna True, Liza should cover more of her mother's songs. She doesn't want to be compared to Judy though because when she was younger people kept treating her like she was trying to copy her mother and that annoyed her because she was trying to make herself a star by her own talent. Still, it'd be nice to hear her sing "Over The Rainbow" :)

  • Poor Judy, she had a very sad life :(

  • @Lealonna True, but she also had a very happy one :). Don't lament Judy's misery, celebrate her happiest and most brilliant moments.

  • Holy crap. My hear just melted. -3 and when she was heaving so was I.

  • she didnt sing this well what a shame didnt know she had a beard

  • one of the best women ever to grace our stages ,tv and more , bar none a true legend !

  • I read in People magazine in the 70s, a quote by Liza and it struck such a chord with me I have never forgotten it. Liza was performing, the crowd asked her to sing "Over the Rainbow"....and Liza paused, smiled, and said softly, "It's already been done." I've always liked that.

  • @getdjman Yes, she unique, a singing rainbow in coloured music seachin` for truth.

  • I am so pleased this performance survived; this, by far, is my favorite performance by the late Judy Garland.

  • @Lealonna Judy told Liza (when several people had been asking her to sing her mother's songs early in her career) Why be a second rate version of someone else? When you can be a first rate version of yourself. She wanted Liza to have her own sucess and "own" it. And also, Liza also realized and has even stated this "Somewhere Over the Rainbow".....thats her mother's song, and was very dear to her heart..........Liza respected that and still does.

  • An amazing performance - possibly ther most heart-rending she ever did of this song. Amazing!!

  • Anytime i hear judy garland sing this song i always get shivers down my spine,

  • So much emotion it's overwhelming.
