A CSX train derailed in Newton Falls on Monday morning, March 28, 2011, causing the evacuation of city residents for caution of hazardous material leaks. Given word of no immediate danger of chemical spills or leaks, the emergency response crews and CSX started the clean-up process. All involved did a fabulous job in clearing the wreckage and rebuilding the tracks so the trains could maintain their schedules. Many thanks to the crews who worked so diligently to get things back to normal in such a quick and timely manner.

The historic train tower, known as the Dispatch Tower to the residents in Newton Falls, was once a train station, built over 100 years ago. The tower suffered massive damage to its foundation and had to be torn down. A huge part of B. & O., Chessie System, and CSX railroad came to an end during the demolition of this historical landmark.

  • I cried when the back hoe knocked down the chimney.

  • Thanks CSX

  • @BNSFrailfan

    yeah

  • @AviationMetalSmith With the tower open, one operator controls just a small portion of track. unlike the many MILES of track that the dispatcher controls.

  • @AviationMetalSmith More than likely, with a set of eyes on switch indications on the board, and eyes on the physical rails Also constant radio monitoring... this may have nort have happened. Now the area is controlled from Indy, unless you a re on the radio direct with the dispatcher, He only sees what his computer screen tells him... and that is if he isn't looking at another part of the line (which runs from New Castle PA, to Greenwich, OH.

  • @TheSterlingLoopTroop yes. Newton Falls,OH on the CSX New Castle Sub. around MP BG94.5

  • what state is this in ohio because some of those pics look familar

  • couldnt have happened to a better town...

  • Maybe this is an afterthought, but if the tower had remained open, and manned 24/7, is it possible this train wreck would not have happened?

I'm under the impression that this derailment was the result of two trains colliding.

  • It was called "HN Tower" and there was a tower operator there for the interlocking out front. never a dispatcher. It was staffed 24/7 until the signal upgrades last year. they were currently only using the lower level for a maintenance office.
