Round thirty five of the 1964 NASCAR Grand National season sees us at historic Daytona International Speedway on the 4th of July for the running of the Firecracker 400. Watch as speed kings such as Foyt, Goldsmith, Isaac and Petty battle for supremacy on the high banks, cheating the draft and fate itself.

  • Love it! Thanks for posting. Great to see the Dodges in front battling for the win!

  • AJ had a fairly decent season in 1964... he won ten Indy car races (including the 500) and the championship...along with this race.

The cars weren't "strictly stock" at that time, but they were obviously a lot more stock than what they call "stock cars" now. When the manufacturers started going to unibody construction as opposed to full frames later in the '60's, that was when the teams started building full tube chassis and roll cages and the cars REALLY began to change.

  • "running with the windows down, though cooler, cuts down the speed"... WINDOWS???

  • @Lights0ut1109 nah they have monster balls, makes you how many photographers died back in the day.

  • Thanks for posting! Great video! I love the guy rolling up his window. Too cool!

  • @UsonianAC yeah. I wonder why the people were standing in the infield...kind of dangerous would you say lol

  • @Lights0ut1109 It seems smaller to me back then, largely because the grandstands have been built up over time since the inaugural Daytona 500 in 1959. Daytona International Speedway is still a 2 1/2 mile, high-banked, tri-oval, however.

  • is it me or does daytona seem smaller back in the day?
