As for good and bad tourists, I don't think it is a cultural thing. I've met open minded/nice people from the US and Europeans that would make fun of the natives and their customs, and vice versa. I don't believe it has anything to do with the country you were born in, it's just a matter of how open minded you are and your education. Sylvain Chomet probably used American tourists because he thought that the “Ugly American” stereotype would get some laughs more easily.

Exactly, I agree. I was not trying to say that you were wrong. I was just trying to point out that it is more likely that Americans give better tips when they visit other countries than the French to begin with, because that's a cultural thing in America and not in most European countries. Of course, if I was visiting America, I would tip because I know it is expected of me. But when I travel through Europe, I don't. While most Americans still do it anyway out of habit.
