Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question...

Q: I've just watched your level 1 and 2 transcription videos and I'm now writing to ask if you could cover these other transcription points; basic tips for hearing notes, the best music styles to begin on, and what you consider is the most important skill that practicing transcription gives a player? Thanks for the excellent work you do!
Henri -- Holland

A: Transcription work (that is done in detail) is not an easy task to get good at. As a teacher, I find it very difficult to get students to study this. There is a barrier between hearing something in the air and knowing exactly what it looks like on a piece of paper. However, in the beginning days of doing any transcription, students have a barrier of transferring the sounds they hear to their hands. So, bridging the gap between what something sounds like and getting that moving in the right direction onto your guitar, (and then onto paper), is generally so difficult that many students resist doing it. But, let's try and break all of this down so it's somewhat easier to comprehend and down the road easier to develop the ability to transcribe. I hope you enjoy this video!

can't you make some beginner videos once in a while?

  • @leopower7,

  • Using the Internet is a great way to learn guitar. Unfortunately my Internet was cut off for six month during this time I was forced to learn by ear. It's only now that I'm back on the net that I realise how much transcribing accelerates ones understanding of music.

  • The way you explained this motivated me to actually start right away.

  • I am wondering whether you are on FB; or you dont mind?

  • 4:07-4:30 so true. It seems like many different songs I try to learn are all different tunings. Capos help some for sure, but I wish I had about 20 guitars all set with different tunings because there are so many used out there. This can get annoying. Also a lot of studio work is layered and sometimes it can be difficult to decipher this.

  • @creativeguitarstudio I expressed myself wrongly, I actually meant intermediate, not beginner because I'm no beginner, and I'd hate to see beginner videos here... I just would like the base to understand these more advanced videos :(

  • Should you be selective about the music that you transcribe? Does it affect your phrasing in any way that can be undesirable? In a sense, you're fine tuning your ears to pick part certain notes, and you replicate those notes on the fret board.

  • To anyone who watches this excellent video. Go out and buy the BOSS GUITAR or Bassist trainer. Its a CD/mp3 palyer that slows the music down plus it also removes instrutments so you can Learn that certain part. \m/

  • Cool lesson, I was actually planning on doing some transcribing today myself. Also, that outro tune was awesome!

  • Sir can you do a Mixolydian, Dorian, and Blues scales over dominant seventh harmonies? thanks in advance....

  • @VicRoseMusic Totally agree with VicRoseMusic, there are tons of billions of beginner videos on youtube and other places to learn each technique and basics. But it's hard to find someone explaining more advanced stuff with such simplicity as Andrew.
