I wouldn't like to be a singer who would sing this song and then have it compared to Baker's version. This is one of those ULTIMATE recordings and nobody will ever be able to match this. :)

It was a performance I will never forget. Priceless! Afterwards,I learned from a friend who knew the conductor and who had attended the dress rehearsal that she was sick with a cold! There will never be another mezzo like Janet Baker.

This woman is the consummate singing actress. I miss her live performances! I am hard pressed to find her equal among today's crop of mezzos.

This is an appropriate conclusion of what, imho, is the greatest song cycle ever composed, at least from the musical standpoint. Even the orchestra does not sound too obtrusive. Overall, among the best renditions of the whole cycle.
