When is war justified? Is the use of torture ever acceptable? Do we have a moral responsibility to intervene against atrocities thousands of miles away? These are some of the issues addressed in a new book by policy experts and faith leaders, published by the Center for American Progress. Pursuing the Global Common Good argues that U.S. foreign policy must go beyond preconceived notions of national self-interest and security by including our ethical obligations to the global community. Whether arguing against unjust wars or for our responsibility to lead against global warming, these essays dispel the faulty view that our national interests conflict with our ethical obligations. To the contrary, they make a strong case that we can do better by doing good because our nation's self-interest and its moral responsibilities are intertwined.

  • When will you learn that the world is NOT a part of the united states, the US is NOT A beacon of hope for the whole world, we all have our own individual values which are wildly different from a police state and a global economy that is based upon greed torture and culling of nature!

Killing our people is not one of your "challenges", we are not your "threat" to be resolved..

  • If every nation in the world swallowed its pride instead of trying to single each other out, imagine where we would be. I mean, come on people. If every one in every nation in the world put thier heads together, we would have already put a man on Mars!

  • What a propaganda machine.

  • Let's all be agents of globalization and homogenization! Oh wait, no thank you.

  • "Every human behing is a predator."

Humans who are predators have an interest in convincing the rest of us that it's normal to behave like a predator.

  • The reason is individual human beings commit evil against other human beings just as individual human beings do good to other human beings. We love our friends and hate our enemies. Human nature is never going to change. The macro level is merely a reflection of the micro level.

  • Rubbish. Every human behing is a predator.

From the teenage boy who cheats on his sweet innocent girlfriend her slutty friend all the way up the ladder to statesmen on contesting nations. If you want be naive or peddle naivety to other fools that's your business.

  • It's true that this is as old as humanity, but only relatively few people are like that. Yet by using their power to deceive, bribe and intimidate they negatively affect the lives of many people.

The problem is that most 'ordinary folks' do not realize there are these high-rolling predators among us.

  • It's individuals without a conscious and with a drive to dominate others (sociopaths) who persue their self-interest at the expense of anyone else.

Some of them are quite intelligent and well educated. Their hunger for power gets them in positions of power in governments and corporations. That's how we and up with "nations that pursue their own interests".

  • Exxon finances Global Warming denialism.

  • It's tyrannical, dictatorial governments - be it fascist, communist or capitalist - that use torture on their own people (and on other people).
