  • I'm looking into buying an RX7 with a 20B conversion. I've read a lot about RX7s and they are not known for their reliability. Is the 20B more reliable than the stock engine, and how much HP do you get out of the 20B?

  • HP for HP the 20B would be more reliable. I hillclimed a 290 RWHP NA 20B for 6 years with no problems. The stock 13B makes around 110 RWHP per rotor (220 total) while this engine is making 190+ RWHP per rotor (573 total) so I would not expect this engine to be as reliable as a stock 13B. FWIW I owned 4 3rd gen RX-7s, hillclimed, draged, auto-xed, street raced them and never had a problem.

  • is it ported or stock ports?

  • It is street ported.

  • Sweet car, I love the way 20Bs sound.

also, is it just me, or is the engine reeeeally far back in the bay? How'd you get it back that far?

  • The front of the engine was placed in the stock location inorder to not conflict with the stearing rack. Because the 20B is 7 inches longer than a 13B, everything behind the engine is 7 inches back. There is a custom shifter to restore the shifter to it's stock location.

  • Got spool?

  • @gav240z Exactly, I daily drove my old FD and beat on it daily 6yrs+. That car was a tank. Still ran good, trapping 109 and it had 196000 miles on it when I sold it. I miss that car.

with an intake, downpipe and exhaust it ran 8.2s in the 1/8th all day on street tires.

  • gav240z so true, we used to hate rotary cars because they had the worst fuel economy and blown seals later did I find out they were obviously built by teens throwing t88's on stock 13b's, I have a 1972 mazda 1200 my plan is for a NA 20b on ITB's

  • @cal04450 carbon build up on the rotors are easy to get rid of and plugged injectors idk never had that problem on pump fuel

  • How does the E85 run with a rotary? I always wondered since the notorious problem with rotors is carbon buil-up, plugged injections, etc.. The 85 must be liquid heaven for that engine?

  • I'm very interested in doing this myself, what would one have to have besides money to get this sound out of a 20b???

  • @noob5000000 hahah fuck thats the funniest shit iv seen on this site before sounds like some sorta resident evil game walkthrough

  • @JuStCaLLMeEvO every stop to think he just doesnt want to thrash his gearbox as a 20b like that will just rip the gearbox apart if it gets thrashed

  • This thing is awesome man. The 20B is off it's head.

  • @Nihil2005 RX-7's get a bad rap for reliability. Honestly the rotary engine is reliable. Just maintain it properly. Too many kids buy these cars and overboost them without properly tuning them and they go boom.

If you buy a nice stock example with service history it will be fine. By the way I'd buy a 13B RX-7 and convert it yourself. 20B would be nuts and 13B turbo stock is very fast! - I know I just bought 1 and it scares the crap out of me on the little roads we have in Ireland.
