http://www.savefitzroygardens.com - The beautiful Fitzroy Gardens, Kings Cross, faces demolition by the Sydney City Council. A shady oasis for inner city dwellers and home to vibrant markets every weekend, the Fitzroy Gardens are slated for a complete makeover (at the cost of at least $6 million). The Gardens will be closed down for at least twelve months. Most of the trees (some up to 80 years old) will be removed. The hexagonal planter walls will go. A wall with convict bricks made in the 1820s will be removed. And somehow Council is touting all this as a wonderful improvement! A Protest RALLY will take place in the Fitzroy Gardens on 6 November 2010 at 11am. Please come and help us stop Council's environmental vandalism!
The National Trust has listed the Fitzroy Gardens on its Register.
It noted the "high level of heritage significance associated with its development through the resumption of private housing to create an inner-city haven, its modernist design by Ilmar Berzins (1921-1993) the first landscape architect employed by a local council in Australia, wide use by the local community and visitors... The design by Berzins was extremely rare and important."
**Thanks, everyone! A big win for the people!**
