Bile's son goes to my old high school. He was the Virginia state cross country champion this year, and is going to the footlocker national championship in San Diego...considering he started running only a year ago. Well, you gotta factor in the genes here
Coe didn't want to win his last race due to a disqualification. There was little chance the protest would be upheld anyway, as one of the 3 members on the appeal panel was African. He wasn't going to deny the poor emerging African continent maximum points. Despite that, it was telling that a team has to pay a sum of money to put in an appeal, which is lost when it's unsuccessful. On this occasion the full sum was refunded to the UK team. Nevertheless, Coe was affected by the incident.
Bile didn't do enough to Coe to warrant a successful appeal. Coe knew it and that's why he didn't want the protest. He was vehement about not pursuing it on the BBC coverage at the time. It was a great race from the top three, 51. for that last 400 with a truly ferocious last 300. Herold should have been set up for this but his 1:45 800 the day before took something out of him, nice tactics from both Bile and Coe except for Bile's misjudgment at the top of the stretch.
@deano27671: Look at the tape. Bile does not cut in -- no need to do so, they have already hit the straight and he has plenty of room, Bile was going to win this race no matter what.
I've watched the tape plenty thanks. Bile cut in on Coe when the room to do so wasn't there. Coe had to cut his stride as a result and put his hand out to let Bile know that he was impeding him. Bile's stride was not affected. The advantage Bile got there was the same at the finish.
I think it said a lot for Coe that he didn't want the UK team to put in an appeal. Bile was the number 1 in the World that year and was the current World Champ at the time. Had Coe not been obstructed it would have been very close who won. To think Coe could still be a match for anyone at the age of 33, and way past his best, makes me think he probably would have been good enough to win in Seoul '88. Certainly Bile was better than any of the medallists there.
I fully agree with everything you say here, Coe was badly obstructed at full speed, you can not chop and change your pace in the home straight. Bile should have been disqualified.
Why is that racist? Because the athlete who caused the obstruction was African? Why is any criticism of someone from another country automatically called racism? Get over yourself! The appeal I mentioned was to the IAAF panel of judges that are always present at such meetings. Just like they have been this week in Berlin. Any country can put in an appeal for a fee of $100. If the appeal fails, then the money is lost. ON this occasion the appeal failed but the money was returned.

Watch the tape.
Bile was going past Coe and Coe blocked him with his arm.
On that day, Coe's final year of competitive running and Bile in his short lived prime, Bile was going to beat Coe 10 out of 10 times
