Inaccuracies
The movie incorrectly presents many aspects of Polish culture. Czarnina (duck blood soup) although very popular until the 19th century is rarely eaten now. Kielbasa (sausage), especially cooked is rarely consumed for breakfast, while each meal in the movie contains it. Music played in the film is of Balcan origin. Procession of the Virgin and selection of a virgin to lead it does not happen in the Polish Roman Catholic church. The movie plays off a number of inaccurate stereotypes. Obsession over a large number of offspring is perhaps a 19th century phenomenon, while smoking and shouting at the table are not accepted in Polish culture.

  • jeżeli to film o polonii amerykańskiej, to dlaczego byrne mówi z rosyjskim akcentem?

  • @katasza29 lepiej z rosyjskim niż z irlandzkim ;P zresztą akcent to mały pikuś przy innych przeinaczeniach z tego filmu, no, ale cóż, można go potraktować, jako amerykańską - specyficzną - wizję polskiej kultury

  • I just finished watching this movie. Originally, I only did because Lena Olin was in it, and she is; unimpeachably, one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen. However, as I watched, I became intrigued, and found myself full of questions... not the least of which is whether or not the matriarchal archetype of the Polish woman is an accurate depiction. In the case of Lena Olin's character, it is NOT a particularly flattering portrait. Fascinating move, though. Surprisingly so.
