July 21, 2010 Logan, Utah contest for sailplanes / gliders. Part 1 of 10 videos. This video shows that sometimes it is best to slow down in some parts of a cross country soaring flight in order to get the fastest total average speed.

Pilot Bruno Vassel IV (B4) is flying a 15 meter ASW-20B sailplane from Logan, Utah up into Idaho and back into Utah. The 2 hours of video were divided into 10 parts for easier viewing. This video shows flying around many of the most popular turn points of Logan Utah used for soaring contests including: Sedgwick Peak, Sherman Peak, Oxford Peak, Gun Sight Peak, the Wellsville Range, Willard Peak and the Logan Airport.

The 15 meter Nationals will be held in Logan Utah in 2011 and hopefully this video will help pilots who have not flown in this area to get at least a feel for the region. Thanks for watching and for your comments.

  • In this part you probably could fly much faster and not wasting so much time. You had great height so speed up and use the whole thermal band and not flying on the cloud base all the time...

  • @modellbobby Flying slow in this part actually helped me win the day. Many other pilots sped through this section and got low. Remember that we needed to tank up to fly 30 miles over unlandable terrain to get to the next ridgeline to thermal up again. I agree is seems slow. Watch the rest of the parts to see how things did speed up after this first slower section. Thanks for watching. :)

  • Love the vids! What a brilliant sport!

  • Absolutely entertaining and educational set of videos of the Logan area.

  • awesome video. I enjoyed watching you do the cross country flying. I've barely made my way to solo but these videos are inspiring. Shame the UK doesn't get conditions anywhere near as good as this!!!

  • Nice videos, thanks for sharing them. I used to belong to the Associated Glider Clubs of Southern California. I was winched up several times at Torrey Pines Glider Port in a Schweizer 2-22C that belonged to the club. I would ride my bicycle twenty miles each was as a fifteen year old and participate in ground operations all day long. Now that area is used by paragliders and hang gliders. Also R/C craft. The nudist beach down below made an xlnt emergency strip, no pun intended.
