The Valley of the Moon Scottish Fiddling School in the northern California redwoods is a week of intensive study, recreation, and good times with people who share an interest in the music and dance traditions of Scotland.
Here we go AGAIN!!! Yippee! Freight Fiddle Summit Thursday night at the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley... and Friday VOM starts (that's 2 days from now!)
O, I should say I dance and always take the VOM dance classes, but I am no pro and don't really know anything but basic steps, but everyone's encouraged to try EVERYTHING!! including fiddle. It's really a supportive and fun place.
Yes, I think I recognize Cape Breton Step too... I'm not a dancer but have been to Alasdair's VOM around 14 times and to Sierra once. I would love to go to Skye or even more... to his new camp in Spain. I'm not sure what to say about the shoes. I use my appalachian clogging shoes I had made to my measurements. I'd say go for comfort... but that said, I've always admired the Woods' family's pretty Irish shoes. (That would be the pretty girls on either side of Nic).
@BaaBaaRaa Thanks for the info! I am a Scottish (plus many others) dancer. I recognize some Cape Breton Step. I want to get the shoes before I go. I started fiddle a few months ago too and I am actually really hoping to go this year if I can. Have you been to his other camps? Is this one the best?
Well, they're making it up... it's a combination of dances. There are pros up there and amateurs together. That's what this camp is about... fun! The Celtic Spring kids are wearing some kind of Irish shoes, Nic Gareiss has his favorite hard soled shoes that make the right sound for him, and then another is in tennis shoes. You should sign up for camp! IT IS SO MUCH FUN.
What kind of dance is that? What kind of shoes do you need? How do I go? I can't stay still while watching this!!! It is so inspiring! I want to do it all now! ;^)
I went to see their end of camp concert a couple of years ago. The amazing thing is that Alasdair and the other teachers were able to take a group ranging from world-class musicians to absolute beginners, and turn them into an orchestra in a week.

It was one of the best concerts I ever attended.
