The fifth annual Leeds Varsity has ended in victory for Leeds Met, following strong performances from the University's sporting stars.
A major highlight of the afternoon's action was a new British race-walking record for Carnegie Scholar Jo Jackson, who had targeted the British Record for the one mile walk which was set by Catherine Charnock at 7.08.9 in 2000. Jo set a time of just under seven minutes, claiming a new British record.
Jo has just started a Sports Performance Degree at Leeds Met which enables her to study and train at the new UKA National Race Walking Centre which is based at Leeds Met.
Other highlights of the afternoon included stellar performances from our women's football teams.
The first team enjoyed a decade of goals against a luckless University of Leeds side, securing a 10-0 win. The women's second team fared almost as well, with their afternoon ending in an 8-0 scoreline.
The men's football teams experienced mixed fortunes with the 1st team succumbing to a 3-2 loss, with the 3rd team enjoying a 5-2 win. Rugby proved more of a mixed bag. The women's rugby union team romped home with an 81-0 scoreline, and in rugby league, the afternoon ended in 70-0 victory. But the climactic men's rugby union match at Headingley Carnegie Stadium proved more of a contest for Leeds Met, with a 2nd team struggling to sign their names on the score sheet in a match that ended in a 26-7 defeat for Leeds Met. Leeds Met has already celebrated a year of unprecedented sporting success, finishing third in the annual British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Overall Points Table for UK universities.
During 2008/09, 143 higher education institutions entered BUCS sporting leagues and competitions all competing for points across 50 sports. Leeds Met has for the first time broken into the top three in the league table, with only Loughborough and Bath recording higher results.
Speaking of the news, Carnegie Director of Sport & Associate Dean Malcolm Brown said: "This year was our best ever sporting year in the history of the University. In addition to these results we have had great individual and team performances in national and international competitions such as winning the prestigious English Volleyball student cup. The University is undoubtedly one of the leading institutions in the UK for sport."
"Students won more medals, more team championships and participated in more competitions than any other group of our students in the past 16 years. Collectively they enhanced substantially the reputation of the University in the sports industry. During the year, the University won a prestigious national award, 'The Coaching Environment of the Year,' recognising the contribution of the University to the education, training, development and support of coaches."
